When choosing a cold room refrigeration compressor, the first thing to consider is the refrigeration power you need, as different types of compressors have different operating ranges. If you need low or high power, it is easy to choose from one technology. For medium-power compressors, it is difficult to choose because there are many types of compressors that are suitable.
It is also important to consider economic factors, for example, choosing between cheap hermetic compressors that cannot be repaired and more expensive semi-hermetic or open compressors that can be repaired. For high power requirements, you can choose between cheap piston compressors or more expensive but more energy-efficient screw compressors.
Other criteria that may influence your choice include noise levels and space requirements.
The latter is important for choosing a model that is compatible with the refrigerant used in the refrigeration circuit. There are a variety of refrigerants to choose from, and refrigeration compressor manufacturers offer specially adjusted models.
In an open refrigeration compressor, the engine and the compressor are separate. The compressor drive shaft is connected to the engine by a connecting sleeve or a belt and pulley. Thus, you can use different types of engines (electric, diesel, gas, etc.) depending on your needs.
Such refrigeration compressors are not known for being compact, they are mainly used for high power. The power can be adjusted in several ways:
– By stopping some cylinders on multi-piston compressors
– By changing the speed of the driver
– By changing the size of any pulley
Another advantage is that, unlike closed refrigeration compressors, all parts of an open compressor are serviceable.
The main disadvantage of this type of refrigeration compressor is that there is a rotating seal on the compressor shaft, which can be a source of refrigerant leaks and wear.
Semi-hermetic compressors are a compromise between open and hermetic compressors.
Like hermetic compressors, the engine and compressor components are enclosed in a closed housing, but this housing is not welded and all components are accessible.
The engine can be cooled by the refrigerant or, in some cases, by a liquid cooling system integrated into the housing.
This sealing system is better than that of an open compressor, as there are no rotating seals on the drive shaft. However, there are still static seals on removable parts, so the sealing is not as complete as that of a hermetic compressor.
Semi-hermetic compressors are used for medium power requirements and although they offer the economic advantage of being serviceable, their cost is significantly higher than that of a hermetic compressor.
